Ord and Weitzel

In September of 2021, Maverick Construction was awarded a contract with the United States Army Corps of Engineers to make improvements to the cemetery entrance at Ord & Weitzel Drive. A portion of this contract required the reconstruction of the Ord & Weitzel Gate which was originally built in 1879 and served as the northern-most gateway to Arlington National Cemetery until it was disassembled in 1979 when it could no longer accommodate wider, modern vehicles. The new gate was reconstructed 30 feet from its original location on top of an auger cast piling and cast in place concrete foundation. On top of the foundation, historic masons’ hand chipped bluestone Carderrock to create two each dry stacked masonry wingwalls that mirrored the original gate’s construction. The 22 original hard carved stones were stacked on top of the wingwalls to produce two each columns that stood 43’ tall and were adorned with limestone Urn’s, each weighing 3500 lbs. each. In addition, the project required a complete rehabilitation of the existing entrance which included replacing existing utilities, constructing a new guard house and bus stop plaza, new roadway work, and landscape restoration. A 1000-foot-long exposed aggregate sidewalk was also constructed from the new entrance to complete the historic pathway known as Custis Walk.

The project required over 750 submittals and involved significant coordination with the daily operations of ANC to avoid disruptions to the +25 funerals that happen daily at the cemetery. Maverick earned many compliments from the USACE and ANC upper management at the ribbon cutting ceremony for our performance. This was also reflected in our final CPARS evaluation which received Exceptional ratings in Management, Schedule, and Quality.
